Creating New Norms With Manny Gutierrez, Maybelline & THBD

Do you know who Manny Gutierrez is?  We all should. He is a brilliantly talented makeup artist, a YouTube star, and the man chosen by Maybelline as the face of its new campaign to promote its golden-tubed Big Shot Mascara, with Shayla Mitchell.

So…let’s talk about reframing beauty, because we need to open it up, and Manny represents a way in. Manny is openly gay, a beauty influencer, and, as Maybelline says, “he encourages viewers of all genders to ‘lash like a boss.'”

Honestly, I love and admire any person who makes a statement by announcing just ‘who they are.’ I love Manny, as we all do at THBD, because our goal is to broaden the definition of beauty. We believe that creating new norms is the way to new and inclusive versions of beauty and we believe that Manny is on the cutting edge of this.

Which is why we very much support Manny’s father in the defense of his son when Christian columnist, Matt Walsh tweeted a homophobic message about parenting, using a photo of Gutierrez.

Manny’s father had this to say to the blogger, “I know the words you speak are from lack of knowing anybody from the LGBT community,” he wrote in a text message. “If you did, you would soon realize they are some of the most real and kind hearted individuals that walk this planet of ours. Going forward, I would choose your actions and words wisely. Just like you would do anything for your family, I would DO for mine.”

I say this…beauty is inclusive, and it is about so much more than what we are shown. I am encouraged and inspired by Manny and in ALL those who seek to make ‘beauty’ inclusive. Join our movement. Reclaim and reframe beauty with THBD!!
